Twelve Vagrant Monologues From the Last Living Star:
Artwork and package design for the album by Bellflur.
Work Needed:
1 - Album packaging (front/back cover and label for vinyl)
2 - Companion book for box set
3 - Box set design and construction
4 - Poster
5 - Video for track from album
6 - Video for Kickstarter fund raising
The pages below were created for a book that accompanies the second side of the album. There is a spoken narrative that lays over the nearly twenty minute long suite of music and the artwork was created to hold the text for the listener to follow through the artwork as the song moves forward. I tried to create a sort of animation by deciding where the text would take the viewer so I could uses different blocks of color and content to add visual texture to the narrative.
I worked with DC artist Ben Tolman to create the ever changing look of the character of the "Star". Ben was able to create a multitude of different forms showing the permutations of the star through the eternity that is it's life.
I created the layouts for each page around basic geometrical shapes which were then sub-divided into the 'comic-book' layout that now houses the images. The use of the comic layout was to help the reader follow the narrative through each page using a visual technique most people would have some familiarity with.
The rest of the imagery was created with watercolors/collage and markers.
Books/Box Sets
The pages were printed at twelve inches by twelve inches on paper made for scrap booking (to save money on the fabrication and time used in cutting). This size worked perfectly for a box constructed to house both the vinyl and the book. The vinyl itself was nearly a square foot also.
The books were given a stencil cut cover page, which the Credits page (located underneath the Cover page) was created to work with as the colors beneath the cut out letters.
The pages were then laid into the boxes with the first half of the book fixed to the left side of the box and the second half to the right side of the box.
A custom made set of magnets was then created, using artwork from the book itself, several layers of resin, paint pens and some glitter. They were packaged in a tray made of clear duct tape and affixed to the inside of the box set. The poster was added to the set and the Limited Edition Box Set Kickstarter rewards were ready to be shipped to the contributors.
ATOMS video
The label releasing the album, asked for a video to be completed by the records release date. I worked with director William Holloway to produce the video below. We were able to complete the filming in two nights, with thanks to Georgina Javor and the staff of the Strathmore Mansion in Bethesda, MD.
KickStarter Promotional Video
The band used KickStarter as a means of crowd sourcing funds to complete the production costs for the album. I created this video with footage taken during the recording sessions for the record. The opening sequence was recorded while I was making another poster for the project.
